Tip pool calculator: split tips by hours worked
Enter the total in the tip jar and the hours each person worked. Everyone's share is worked out to the cent, and the shares always add up to the total.
How to split tips by hours worked
Each person's share is (their hours ÷ everyone's hours) × total tips. In practice it's easiest to do in three steps:
- Add up the hours everyone in the pool worked during the period.
- Find the tip rate per hour: divide the total tips by the total hours.
- Multiply each person's hours by that rate to get their share.
Example: $640 shared across 80 hours
$640 ÷ 80 hours = $8.00 per hour.
| Name | Hours | Calculation | Tip share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maria | 32 h | 32 × $8.00 | $256.00 |
| James | 24 h | 24 × $8.00 | $192.00 |
| Priya | 16 h | 16 × $8.00 | $128.00 |
| Sam | 8 h | 8 × $8.00 | $64.00 |

How do you divide tips by hours worked?
Add up the hours everyone in the pool worked, then divide the total tips by those hours to get a tip rate per hour. Multiply each person's hours by that rate to get their share. For example, $640 shared across 80 hours is $8 an hour, so someone who worked 24 hours gets $192.
Is splitting tips by hours worked fair?
It's the most common way to split a tip pool because it's simple and easy to check: work twice the hours, get twice the share. Some teams also weight by role (for example servers 1.0, bussers 0.5). This calculator splits by hours only.
What happens to the leftover cents?
Shares rarely divide into whole cents. The calculator rounds every share down, then gives the leftover cents one at a time to the people whose shares were rounded down the most, so the shares always add up to exactly the tip total.
Can managers take part in a tip pool?
It depends on where you operate. In the US, federal law doesn't let managers or supervisors keep any part of employees' tips, and who else can join the pool depends on how you pay the minimum wage. State and local rules, and rules in other countries, differ, so check them before you decide who's in the pool.
Can Hourvy split tips for me automatically?
Yes. Hourvy already has every worker's clocked hours, so on a draft pay period you choose Split pooled tips, enter the total, and each share is added to that worker's pay as a tip. Workers see their share on their own pay screen.
